Welcome to “maybe I spend too long on bgs” the story.
(that’s not going to change)
Very discreet Tammy.
everyone can’t see the green light though right?
(well, except gatsby)
They can’t all see the green light? Cuz, I’m a little freaked out for Tammy outing the Super Secret Wayfarer Hideout. D:
Take a look at the alt text!
But that’s why people are like wow an earthquake and not WHY IS GOKU SHOOTING A KAMEHAMEHA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY.
Ah, alt text… this is what I miss by reading this on my phone
@Soroya123 hey if you select the image like you are going to copy it, it displays the alt text above the copy/save options
Not on my iPad. I’ve never been able to read any of the Alt text. Kadi, do you think you could add a button for the Alt text? Girl’s with Slingshots has one and Dumbing of Age has a hidden one.
Shows on my ipad, I never knew! Grrrrr
Are you just tapping and holding the image until “copy” comes up? Only the pop up for “copy” shows for me and nothing else. What am I doing wrong?
Nevermind, this one shows but previous pages do not weird
I CAN SEE THE GLORY OF THE ALT TEXT. THIS IS WONDERFUL! THANK YOU! (Hopefully it will work for other pages too )
Aww, man. I completely forgot about the alt text today. Freaking Out Crisis: Averted! I can now ship Ewan and Harris in peace.
Is it safe to assume the three people in the three middle panels are part of the five percent?
Also, I wonder if this is like…pipe under pressure, and our dear princess just popped the spigot off? Like, no Orphic has used the power in forever, and she’s just “do whatever” and 200+ years of magic just went nuts from sudden release?
Alt theory – there’s a giant up there.
Hilarious. I was just about to post a comment about your webcomic being WAY over 9000 – the cityscape is just outrageous.
Blingsprings Goku might choose that energy tint, but I always remember it being blue.
I had not idea this thing called alt text existed! Alas, I can neitehr see it on the web nor on my phone. What’s a girl to do??
It’s been there for quite a few pages; basically if you’re using a computer all you have to do is hover above the image and a line of text appears next to your arrow. I don’t know about on the phone though.
95% of the internet are unaware there is an alt text. But those 5%. Hmmm.
Gatsby- as in The Great Gatsby. The green light is a prominent symbol in the novel.
And now I’m worried about the color yellow…
That first panel must’ve taken forever to make, and I feel for you. Despite its unevenness it looks like a nicely designed city and kudos for sticking with this setting and panel layout after this many tricky backgrounds to go through.
um, is that a typo? i think it’s “straits”, not “straights”…..
Oh dingly dang, I side eyed that earlier and meant to double check and I forgot! Fixing!
Holy moly the city looks gorgeous Kadi OAO
Aye, the word ought be written “straits.”
Hey! It’s that hipster dude again in the second panel. Love him, so trendy!
So if I ride a bicycle and wear sunglasses, I’m a hipster?
In that case, I’ve been hip for the last 40 years.
LoL If only it was that easy to be hip! Trust me I’ve tried. ;-;
I think it’s the outfit he’s wearing that makes him a hipster.
Alicia, shown. Also, the reporter guy is back. So do you need the sight to see the pillar? Or do they have no idea because they’re not paying attention?
And is that Rajani in the crowd with the earrings?
How do you know all these names? I’m so lost.
Rajani’s name was in one of the side articles of the first Annotation
Rajani has been name-dropped. You can also see her in the scrapbook. She’s the not-Tamaura girl standing next to Harris.
Alicia is mentioned on the tumblr. She is (I’m fairly sure) the leader of the Wayfarers. And apparently she has the Sight.
The reporter guy has a name but I don’t feel like looking it up. He’s a main character, and I think he’s also with the Wayfarers. It’s good to see more characters showing up; it means the story is actually starting.
Thanks for this! I don’t go to outside sources much, so this was very useful.
Yes! And yes, you need the sight to see the pillar unless you are within the Blindsprings itself. So both Street and Imogen can see it right now, but could not if they left the Blindsprings.
Oh, I didn’t get that at all on this page. I read the comments and saw that you posted the information in the alt text, but if if 95% of people aren’t supposed to be able to see the pillar it really should be communicated through the comic, not hidden in an invisible alt-text. Because the first thee passerby’s shown all see the pillar my natural assumtion was that most people do see it, and the people in the fourth panel might just be in some alley where they couldn’t see it..
I feel like you have a lot of backstory and world mechanics worked out that I assume are important, but I’m also afraid that if you print a book (without alt texts and blog comments to provide the necessary info to understand each scene) a lot of this story might end up being very confusing. And I really do hope that doesn’t happen, because at the beginning of this story it felt like the kind I’d love to buy as a book and read to my children when they’re older. :/
OMG I WAS RIGHT YUSS
Is that lady in Panel 3 … Imogen’s mum? I think I see a photo of Imogen on her wall …
I think that’s a picture of the woman herself. She does have a strong resemblance to Imogen, and could be her mother.
I think he means the child in the middle of the picture, the one who’s conveniently obscured by the window.
I was coming into the comments just to ask this. They resemble each other, there’s a child in the painting, she has a worried look an Orphic might get at seeing this turn of events…
Oooooh FUTURE IMPORTANT CHARACTERS?
I don’t want to make the assertion that “this” is like “that”. I just wanted to state that I like how I’ve finally found another story where this power dynamic is used again. The Academists and the Orphic sealed characters in a strange power struggle of suppression and redirection brings me back to reading the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. One of the biggest reasons I was a fan of that trilogy was the strange and complicated power dynamics between the Magicians who ruled (a fictional historical london) and the djinn and commoners who were sub servant to their powers. This takes a completely different outlet of this power dynamic but I’m glad to see it again nonetheless. Can’t wait to see more! Thank you for the brilliant pages!
I’ve mentioned before that I read the Bartimaeus Trilogy after I had set this version of the story in motion, so it was sort of shocking to see it, albeit slightly different, in someone else’s book! I know I moved some stuff around to make sure no one thought I was stepping on toes but I have this funny feeling that in the years since, it moved closer to what Jonathan Stroud did, lol.
keep up the excellent bgs- they’re time well spent, and they add a whole lot of character and class to your already remarkable comic. Quality always pays off. so long as it doesn’t compromise the bottom line of timely delivery (at your discretion), developed characters, and well-told story. So keep it up! It’s very professional of you to do so.
Whoa to all ye oppressors for the Queen has returned.
I know that feeling of struggling with backgrounds, especially architecture.
But I think you did a pretty good job on this page, and something I look forward to seeing improve even more through out the story.
Why do I have a feeling that all the people shown here freaking out about the pillar are going to be important in the story? Like, I could be wrong, but isn’t that Rajani? And Alicia?
Wait a second…what if these people (according to the alt text the 5%) can see the ENORMOUS LIME GREENISH PILLAR OF AWESOMENESS because they have some sort of magical ability? o.O
So many lovely ladies! And the black building is gorgeous. I wish I lived in such a city… without the earthquakes and pillars of flame, of course.
OOOH! It’s the one Indian lady you have mentioned in passing whose name is escaping me that I vaguely remember you being excited about on tumblr…
I remember odd details…
the academist HQ reminds of the Carbide & Carbon Building, which is awesome because I love that building!
I am starting to think that the Academics may not be the “bad guys”. Perhaps they have their own difficulties as well.
I don’t think that 95% even know there IS a Nawonan district since the entrance is psionic
Harris is also currently in the Nawonan district, you can see it on the building on the second page of this chapter. It’s a large city, so it’s split up into distinct districts.
Girl in Panel 4: First 2 girls walked into the wall and 2 pages later this happens again geez.
I think they’re different people.
That is correct- they’re both asian but not the same person???
Has anybody else noticed that the person in panel 3 kinda looks like Imogen?
Blindsprings: the story of how everyone has excellent hair.
Agh! my heartstrings!!! SEAR LORD JESUS TAKE THIS HONDA WHEEL, LET ME SHRIVEL AT THE THOUGHT THAT HARRIS X TUMARA MIGHT NOT BE!!!!!! AND THAT I LOOOOOOOOOVE THIS NEW SHIP!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
Fuck no you’re not spending too long on backgrounds, that’s makes this comic so great!
You do NOT spend too much time on bgs. They’re beautiful. You’re beautiful. :,)
Well, I mean it is your life and all actually. So your call if they are too much. But I will say they are appreciated. But I don’t want you to get CT or anything. :T
